They seem to appear out of nowhere, flying around fruit bowls and sinks, and they can feel impossible to eliminate. Kitchen gnats (often called fruit flies) are one of the most common — and most annoying — household problems.

The good news? Their presence is not inevitable. By understanding what attracts them and using simple, natural solutions, you can eliminate them effectively and prevent them from coming back.


1. Why Do Gnats Appear in the Kitchen?

a. Overripe or Damaged Fruit — Their Favorite Target

Fruit flies (Drosophila) are especially attracted to fermenting fruit.

A forgotten banana or a slightly bruised apple in your fruit bowl can be enough to trigger a full infestation. That’s why it’s important to regularly check the condition of exposed fruits and remove any that are starting to spoil.

Fermented or sugary liquids such as wine, fruit juice, or vinegar give off odors that strongly attract gnats.
