How long has the practice of daylight saving time been in France?

First attempt in 1916
DST was first introduced in France in 1916 by MP André Honnorat. During World War I, this measure was intended to save coal, a primary fuel in the old days. It remained in effect until the liberation in 1944, when it was finally abandoned. After the pressure on energy resources was removed, the pressure on energy resources decreased, making this measure less harmful. DST was then in effect year-round. Daylight saving time was introduced after the oil crisis.

A decree of September 19, 1975, established permanent daylight saving time in France. Valéry Giscard d'Estaing officially proposed it in 1976, following the 1973 oil crisis. In 1998, the dates for the time change were standardized across the European Union. It was then decided that the change to winter time would occur on the last Sunday in October, and to summer time on the last day of March.
