My initial, groggy thought was simple confusion. Had a household object—a toy, a piece of clothing, perhaps a cleaning brush—accidentally fallen into the water? I leaned closer, trying to identify the dark mass.

I grabbed my children without a second thought and we fled the house, leaving the front door wide open in our hasty retreat.
